After building a mountain of Italian eatery experience, partners Megan Dickson and John Pennington opened Winflo Osteria in 2013 with a little help from some friends. Now the experiment has turned into a charming staple of Austin’s authentic meals.

The Restaurant

Not simply a long-kindled romance with fine dining, John and Megan fell for each other in high school. Both beginning their life in the restaurant industry at 16, the two have grown together with a rich passion for the finer points of a great dining experience. Leaving nothing to chance, Megan sought the help of her brother in constructing Winflo within the bones of a nearly hundred-year-old craftsman bungalow, hiding under the shade of a 300-year-old oak tree. Add in the live music performances with room to migrate between bar and outdoor patio, the entire restaurant soaks you in an atmosphere that calls on memories of extravagant dinner parties with a perfectly paired collection of wine, and a good old-fashioned meal.

The Food

As if atmosphere was only the first step on their way to greatness, Winflo Osteria is chasing the type of Italian food that goes beyond authentic. An Italian brick oven fuels John’s obsession with pizza. Achieving the rank of officially certified Napoletana pizza, his role as chef has been to take Winflo’s rich ingredients and put them to work in a collection of meals that reflect the identity of homemade Italian meals. The other treasures being turned out in style are savory dishes using clever pairings, like their Cavatelli con Salsiccia pasta, all-natural local sausage with caramelized onions, crimini mushrooms with gorgonzola cream sauce. For anyone ering on lighter side, a number of familiar salad options use creative pairings that bring new taste. For example, go Kale Salad with almonds and granny smith apples, or Caeser Salad with a house-made dressing, Parmigiano-Reggiano and Focaccia Croutons. The diverse options also occasionally open to a brilliant offering in the form of a chef’s menu, guaranteeing that no matter how many times you return to Winflo Osteria, you’re in for a memorable experience in decadence.
