How to Stay Fit Throughout the Holiday Season

We’ve still got a long ways to go before we need to worry about our summer beach bods. But that doesn’t mean we should ignore our fitness all together. The holiday season is known for its high fat feasts and seasonal spirits, meaning our body/temples are under yuletide attack. For those that want to keep it slim, trim and thin, here are some tips to stay fit throughout the holiday season.

Up and at ‘Em

An inviting-looking couch, pillow, and blanket

Whether you’re cozy under the covers, diving face first into a holiday feast, or sipping on some hot coco, make sure not to sit for too long. We have a tendency this time of year to stay still which can be hazardous for our health. According to experts, “sitting for excessively long periods of time is a risk factor for early death.” They advise to get up every thirty minutes and take a walk around the room.

Get Outside

Now that you’re up, why not take it several steps further? The weather outside may be frightful, but you better believe it’s delightful. Get gussied up in your snow grab, grab a great pair of gloves and explore the outdoors. This is an easy solution to stay fit through the holiday season. Besides, ask yourself, how many more times do you really need to watch those old holiday reruns?

Hydrate

Lemon mint and ice water on a table

Water can work wonders for your health, and is the easiest way to curb over consumption. In fact, your body will sometimes confuse thirst with hunger, meaning you may end up accidentally stuffing yourself. Drink a large glass of water before a big meal to prevent over eating. It could save you a few couple extra inches before the holiday season is done.

Exercise Early

What with all the office parties, family functions and holiday get-togethers, it can be easy to get distracted. Start your morning off early with an intensive bit of exercise. This way you won’t have the opportunity to bail on it later.

Get Plenty of Rest

A little rest will go a long way. If you plan on exercising early, your best bet is by getting to bed at reasonable hour. We all want to party and stay up late, but if you’re serious about staying fir throughout the holiday season, you need to keep it low key…at least some of the time.

Start on that New Year’s Resolution Early

Thinking about hitting the gym in January? Maybe you’d like to take up indoor rock climbing? Whatever the case, we just have one question. Why wait? There’s no time like the present to make a move and improve your health. Better yet, you’ll beat all those reformed fitness enthusiasts who show up in the new year.

Snowball fight

Depending on who you talk to, a snowy holiday season can be a blessing or a curse. If you’re in the former camp, this is your chance to get outside and increase your heart rate. There’s nothing quite like a good old fashion snowball fight, especially when you want to sweat.

Mall Crawl

If you can’t make it to the mountain, try and make it to the mall. You’d be amazed at what a little walking will do for your health. Lace up your runners, finish off your seasonal shopping, and get moving.

Tear it Up

No office party is complete without a couple trips to the dance floor. What better way to burn off all those Irish coffees you’ve been consuming?

If you want to stay fit throughout the holiday season, all you need is a bit of will power. Set a goal and stick to it. But remember: a little fun won’t kill you. Take a night off, enjoy a few rum and eggnogs, and don’t worry about a couple extra cheat days!
